Firstly I would like to introduce myself before I ask for you to support someone you mightn't know, and tell you why I'm a doing this fundraiser.
My name is Laura Hooper and I am a sixteen year old woman who wants to make life changing moments possible. I just started year 12. I am an achieved corporal in the Australian Air Force cadets, soon to attend my sergents promotions course.
My first major fundraiser was in 2012. I was eleven at the time and almost finished year 6 when I decided to follow my brother’s example and take part in the World’s Greatest Shave. By shaving my hair I raised almost $5000 for Leukaemia research through the support of local businesses, friends, family and generous strangers. Due to the length of my blonde locks exceeding 50cm I was able to donate my hair to the Alopecia Foundation, to be made into wigs to help people who aren’t able to choose the length of their hair and boost their self confidence.
It was two years later in 2014 that I join the Australian Air Force Cadets as a member of 337SQN Armidale. Over the years as a cadet I have been fortunate enough to meet countless service men and women. Some I would briefly talk to, others I now call friends; but all willing to share their amazing journeys and stories about their lives. The defence force is a community that is as tight knit as family, so when personnel are separated from this community or experience challenges due to injury, operational requirements or transitioning to civilian life their journeys can hit a rough patch. SoldierOn is an organisation that offers a range of services to be there to support these personnel. It is therefore why I have chosen SoldierOn as an organisation to fundraise for, to know that those who serve are supported and that I can purse a defence career knowing this.
So after the response from my previous shave and the connection I now have with defence personnel it is time to cut my hair again for another great cause! I ask for you to get behind my fundraiser and Soldier on. The goal is to exceed $10 000 as to provide life changing moments to defence men and women.
